Maiden Castle Guided Tour
Discover the story of one of Britain’s most extraordinary prehistoric landmarks with our Maiden Castle Guided Tour.
Your journey begins at the museum, where you will meet one of our knowledgeable guides before travelling together to Maiden Castle. During the short journey, your guide will introduce the site’s remarkable history — from its early Neolithic origins to its transformation into one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. Through expert storytelling, they will set the scene for the landscape you’re about to explore.
Once at Maiden Castle, take a guided walk across the vast earthworks and towering ramparts that have dominated the Dorset landscape for over two thousand years. As you pass through its monumental entrances and along its impressive defences, your guide will bring the site to life with insights into Iron Age life, the famous archaeological excavations, and the dramatic events that shaped the hillfort’s past.
After exploring the site, you’ll return to Dorset Museum & Art Gallery for a guided walk through the People’s Dorset gallery, where artefacts from the Maiden Castle excavations are displayed. Here you’ll encounter the objects uncovered by archaeologists and discover remarkable finds that help tell the story of the people who once lived within the hillfort.
This unique experience connects the landscape itself with the objects discovered there, offering a rich and immersive journey into Dorset’s ancient past.
