Smuggling in Dorset and Hampshire
Please join us for a special evening of music, folklore and local history, with Bonny Sartin.
In the 18th and 19th centuries high taxes led to an increase in illicit imports to Britain. Coastal communities in Dorset and Hampshire became hubs for contraband. Stories of the battles between smugglers and excisemen have been handed down in archival records, family stories, local legends and songs. People interested in the history of smuggling might like to check this list of useful archives held at Dorset History Centre.
Ticket price includes a glass of wine or soft drink and nibbles.
Bonny is renowned in Dorset both as an experienced speaker and a wonderful singer, being a member of the folk group The Yetties, which derived their name from Yetminster.
