Roman Dorchester Walk
Step back in time with our trained guides and immerse yourself in the historic Roman town of Durnovaria…
Scattered throughout the busy market town of Dorchester are traces of a Roman past. Archaeological investigations across Dorchester have uncovered numerous important artefacts – many of which are now on display in the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery – which provide fascinating insights into life in Roman Britain. To this day, Dorchester’s modern plan still bears the imprint of Roman Durnovaria.
Your tour will begin at Dorset Museum and Art Gallery, where our trained guides will deliver a presentation taking you on a journey into the Dorchester’s rich Roman past and archaeological history. You will then be led on a guided tour of Roman artefacts in our People’s Dorset Gallery, before embarking on a guided walk to retrace the ancient landmarks of Durnovaria. You’ll follow the line of its defences around the Town Walks and discover little-known sites such as the place where the Roman baths were excavated.
Day access to the museum is also included in your ticket, so you can always come back afterwards to explore more.
