Film screening: The Well-Digger’s Daughter
A beautiful film based on the novel by Marcel Pagnol of “Jean de Florette” fame and starring/directed by Daniel Auteuil.
It is the tale of a working-class widower raising his six daughters in rural Provence at the start of World War I – a charming, finely acted tale of love, family and class barriers.
After being raised in Paris, the eldest daughter returns home and, whilst more worldly, she is still fearfully naïve. She is seduced by Jacques Mazel, a dashing pilot and son of a wealthy local store owner. How will the moral codes and class tensions of this era deal with her ensuing disgrace?
A story of great human emotion. A joy to watch!
