COSENS OF WEYMOUTH 1852-1996 and their famous paddle steamers
COSENS OF WEYMOUTH 1852-1996 and their famous paddle steamers – A talk by Richard Clammer
For over 100 years the paddle steamers belonging to Cosens & Company were a familiar sight in Weymouth Harbour and all along the south coast of England. Best-remembered for their summer excursion sailings, the steamers were also involved in towage, dramatic salvage work, servicing the naval fleets in Portland Harbour and wartime minesweeping. Cosens, at one time Weymouth’s largest employer, also operated a major engineering and ship-repairing business and were involved in the coal, diving and block ice trades.
Richard, who grew up in Weymouth, is author of a two-volume history of the company together with several other maritime history books.
