‘Bohemia in East Chaldon’ Pop-Up Pride
Join Mark Damon Chutter, Chairman and Academic Director of the Thomas Hardy Society, for a fascinating exploration of the bohemian enclave of writers and artists who made Chaldon Herring their home during the 1920s and 1930s.
At the heart of this creative community were the Powys family, Sylvia Townsend Warner, and sculptor and artist Elizabeth Muntz—figures who together formed a distinctive, rural counterpart to the Bloomsbury Group.
In this talk, Mark will examine the cultural and historical significance of this remarkable circle, with particular focus on themes of gender representation and sexual identity within their work. He will also explore how these artists engaged with the Dorset landscape, and consider their lasting contribution to the literary canon.
