Join Mark Damon Chutter for a tour to explore Ancient Fordington, from the pre-Roman discoveries and Roman artefacts on view in St George’s Church to the Roman remains discovered under Fordington Vicarage.
Fordington’s origins can be traced back to antiquity. Iron Age burials have been recorded in St George’s churchyard along with a horse burial with an iron bit in its mouth, perhaps slain on the grave of an ancient warrior. Over 300 Roman burials have been recorded on and near the line of Fordington High Street and a beautiful roman mosaic was discovered at the Old Foundry.
The guided tour will be followed by a final optional refreshment stop at the King’s Arms (Drinks not included).
Home of Hillforts & Henges is an exciting event from 28th to 30th July that will celebrate Dorchester’s neolithic, bronze and iron age landscape rich in earthworks and the people that have lived here for over 6,000 years.
The event is included in the National CBA Festival of Archaeology 2023 and activities will take place at multiple locations across the town.
