A promenade through Victorian Pleasure Gardens
Join Mark Chutter, THS Chairman & Academic Director for a stroll through this wonderful park
The Borough Gardens have been a focus for many of Dorchester’s events since Victorian times. In 1895, Alderman Gregory John Gregory Gregory, Mayor of Dorchester, paid £3,400 to the Duchy of Cornwall for undeveloped land to construct `pleasure gardens for the health and recreation of the inhabitants of Dorchester’.
Hardy would have been 56 when the Borough Gardens were officially opened on 30th July 1896. Today, beautifully maintained by Dorchester Town Council, the gardens still retain their Victorian layout and features, together with the original structural planting, laid out to a plan by the renowned landscape architect William Goldring of Kew Gardens, who personally supervised the planting.
