The Town Pump, in the middle of Cornhill is an obelisk built of Portland stone in 1784. The water pump was removed in the 1930s or 1940s but the Town Pump is still very much the heart of Dorchester – particularly on New Year’s Eve.
Several of the buildings in the area surrounding the pump, which is known as Cornhill, have been in the same use for many years. The area is also the site of the Cornhill Market, which has traded for over 100 years and has a variety of fast-food clothing book and craft stalls throughout the week.
